Breg Ultra CTS Ankle Brace-Small/Medium Review

I bought this because I had torn my ligaments in my right ankle, and have had three surgeries since my initial injury in 2005. I have had to wear an Aircast brace for the last two years, and finally had a surgery that reduced my pain enough to where I could transfer to a brace. I still have instability, and was worried about rolling my ankle again, so I thought this brace would be the best transition from the boot to a brace while wearing a shoe. The plastic is pretty tough, and it seems almost impossible to roll your ankle while wearing this (if you actually did roll it, you'd probably have a terrible injury). The problem with it for me was that the bottom is very inflexible, so you have to heat it up and mold it to your foot. There's a special tool orthopedic businesses can use to do this, but you can also use a hairdryer (which is what I did). It never felt really comfortable after I heated it up, however.

The biggest issue I had was when I did get it into my shoe (you need to get very wide shoes to get this brace into a shoe), the hinges dug into my ankle, right on the part where I had been cut open for my most current surgery. I could only wear the brace for about an hour or so before I had to take it off because it hurt so bad. I wore two socks, one long and cushioned at the bottom and around the ankle, and one regular sock for extra padding around my ankle, and it still hurt badly. In fact, I couldn't wait to get it off. I did not try an ace bandage wrapped around a sock for extra padding, and that might make a difference for some people.

I can't say I would necessarily recommend this brace to other people with ankle injuries. While it is incredibly sturdy, I have tried the ASO ankle stabilizer brace (I got it for free from my physical therapist) and found that it fits in my shoe comfortably, and the brace is sturdy enough that you can't really move your ankle from side to side.

I'm not sure if it was just the hinges (and maybe just hinge braces in general are uncomfortable for me due to the location of my ankle sprain), but this brace wasn't for me. If you have tried hinged ankle braces before and do not have a problem with being comfortable with them, I would say this is a good brace if you are worried about rolling your ankle, otherwise, it might be better to stick with a wrap and lace-up brace like the ASO ankle stabilizer brace.
